Teaching Kids How To Fish, Figuratively
posted (August 17, 2018)

As we told you earlier in the week, the Ministry of Education along with its partners want to form what’s called a Parlamentary Front against Hunger and Malnutrition. It sounds fancy but the idea is simple: to get the law makes involved in the fight against hunger for kids. Now that is one part of the plan. The Ministry also wants to establish a national feeding program that benefits kids across the country. Today a workshop was held at the Ministry of Agriculture conference room to discuss the way forward in this expansion.

Yvonne Codd - Health and Nutrition Coordinator, Min. of Education
"The workshop was bringing together persons from all over the districts; the workshop was dealing with how we will be able to come to achieving sustainable school feeding schools in our country. We know that a lot of times we have a whole lot of school feeding programs within the country but everybody is not together, it's not coordinated. We want to be able to have all the ministries involved to be able to have persons from within the community be able to have the schools involved, parents involved in the whole process of bringing together what we'll consider as a healthy snack for children in schools, healthy meals for children in schools."

Daniel Ortiz
"How explain to us what were some of the ideas put forward to try to make sure it's sustainable and affordable to the schools should it be rolled out countrywide."

Yvonne Codd

"Okay should it be rolled out countrywide we know that we need the parliamentarians with us, we know that we need laws to be in place, laws that will be able to take care of the nutritional values of our children. We know that we need to have all the ministries involved that will be able to share the responsibility of what it takes to make us be sustainable."

Emilio Montero - Coordinator for the National Food & Nutrition Security Commission, Ministry of Agriculture
"The purpose then of the 2 days was learning from the Toledo experience where we did the pilot project and all the components already being in the district of Toledo particularly we used these 4 schools to start the pilot project, San Antonio, Santa Cruz, Santa Elena and Pueblo Viejo is that experience and we share that experience that we learnt by doing the pilot in those schools. The next step now is that Ministry of Education wants to extend that experience into a national level."

It was a 2 day workshop. Teachers, principals and other partners attended.
