Broad Daylight Narco-Hit Outside A Kid’s Football Tournament
posted (August 20, 2018)

The weekend ended violently in Orange Walk Town with a double murder which happened just outside the crowded Louisiana football field where kids were playing in a football tournament.

But the trophy ceremony for the winners was interrupted by the sound of more than a dozen gunshots which were fired right outside the football field's main gate.

Two of the tournament's fans, 34 year-old Junior Triminio and 19 year-old Christopher Enrique Calderon, had gone outside to eat, and that's where masked gunmen ambushed both men, and killed them right n front of the football field.

Our news team was in Orange Walk following this story for most of the day, and Daniel Ortiz reports:

Yesterday evening at 5:25, Orange Walk residents Junior Triminio and Christopher Enrique Calderon came under sustained gunfire, right outside the Louisana Football Field. Their masked attackers had no regard for the fact that this compound was filled with children, their parents and other innocent bystanders who were there to supporting the kids in a family sporting event.

Eyewitnesses say that Triminio, who is reputed drug and gang figure in Orange Walk Town, left out of the main entrance gate, and he was in the company of 19 year-old Christopher Enrique Calderon, and 2 other men. Information to 7News that all 4 companions left the football compound to pick up some snacks.

At around 5:20 p.m., they were just outside, on the street, when the shooters arrived in a white SUV and opened fire on the group.

Triminio and Calderon were the ones hit by the barrage. Calderon was injured to the head, near his left ear, and he was also injured to the right hip, the lower back, and buttocks area. Triminio was hit to the left and right side of his chest, and on the right upper arm.

Meanwhile, everyone else inside the compound of the football field did not even realize that a double execution was taking place until it had already happened. Mayor Kevin Bernard, who sponsored 2 of the children's teams for the Mundialito tournament, told us that he mistook the sound of gunfire for fireworks:

Mayor Kevin Bernard - Attended Mundialito
"This thing happened so fast yesterday, a lot of people out there, families with children enjoying very much fun entertainment. I could recall very clearly when the games went on to penalties and everybody was going to do the ceremonies and trophies and when we heard a bang, several shots. At first initially I thought it was fireworks to be honest with you, I though wow somebody is celebrating already with fireworks but look up top, nothing. I heard another said and I heard the guy that was next to me said mayor that's not fireworks that gunshots, that's when you saw the reaction of several people that were on the fence, sitting on the fence watching the game started to run and there were a lot of people running towards the gate because the gate of the football field was locked, we all were inside including the minister Aragon who was there as a sponsor for the Mundialito."

Police officers acting as security for the event locked the gate when they realized what was happening, protecting the crowd inside from the shooters, and stopping any inquisitive person from trying to witness first-hand what was going on.

Meanwhile, Guy Trapp and his family got the scare of their lives when an injured Junior Triminio dashed into their home fleeing from his attackers. The Trapp family home is right across the street from the football field.

His attackers didn't let up - as he tried to close the door on the gunmen, they fired shots through it, determined to finish the execution.

Trapp described that moment for us when the gunshots he heard from the street came all the way into their living room.

Guy Trapp - Head of the Family
"The moment it started to happen, that was something very scary like if you're in a movie, then I saw the man standing right behind the door and that's where I continue hearing more shots. That now put me to a risk that one of us could get hurt inside the house, so I yelled at each of one of them told them let's get low but it was no panicking for them that they started to scream and making things more than what it is or what it was and I told them to be calm. So they calmed down themselves, now we are in the same one room, I never know that there was a guy lying down, he was still bleeding and then after the banging, well I said you know what the gunman is gone, so we could see what we need to do."

Trapp and his family called for the police, and they removed Triminio off their living room floor, leaving a bloody mess behind, and a traumatized family. Triminio spent his last few moments alive in that house, and he succumbed to his injuries a short while after.

Calderon was rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he died in surgery an hour later.

For all those involved, the brazenness of this deadly attack is what caught them off-guard.

Daniel Ortiz
"Has this ever happened to you in your family before that someone runs into your house trying to get away from gun fire?"

Guy Trapp
"Never, ever, this is the first time that I sit down back here and experience something so horrible."

Daniel Ortiz
"It must make you a lot more wary about your safety and concern for security for your family."

Guy Trapp
"Security, yeah, whenever I'm here we don't want to have these doors too open. Anybody could come at any time and haul that door and come inside, it's best to be safe. Belize is getting in a mess with these kind of violence."

Mayor Kevin Bernard
"Sadly though, there were a lot of children who were around, people were sitting outside, people were all over the place enjoying the Mundialito tournament and to see things like this happen right in front, it's really alarming."

Street sources suggest that Triminio was the intended target, and information to 7News is that he has heavy underworld connections in the north.

He made the evening news last year in January as part of a trio of persons who police busted with 4.8 kilos of marijuana in Trial Farm Village. Among the defendants who were charged with Triminio was Alberto Vargas. You'll remember that Vargas was shot and killed 5 weeks ago in what was allegedly a drug transaction gone wrong.

And the connection between Vargas and Triminio is important because shortly after Triminio was killed yesterday, someone used Facebook account in Vargas' name to claim credit for the double murder, and that person offered a bizarre motive for Triminio's killing. This unknown user also made wholesale death threats against other members of the Triminio family, and two other Orange Walk men.  Police say they are following up on those leads - even if the Facebook page is in a dead man's name.

As for 19 year-old Christopher Enrique Calderon, his family from San Antonio Village in Orange Walk tell us that he was living with his mother and step-father in that village. That's up until very recently, when he moved in with his father, who lives in Orange Walk Town. They also tell us that start today, as a second year student at the Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College.
