"Even the devil has his followers" - that's what Opposition Leader John Briceno had to say about Arthur Saldivar on Friday. He confirmed that his party's national executive has rejected Arthur Saldivar's application to run in the upcoming Belmopan standard bearer convention.
Well, an open letter written in the name of the Saldivar family is directed to Briceño to complain that he has been unfair in his remarks. Their letter begins with an immediate condemnation of what they see as Briceño failing to demonstrate that he has, quote, "the character of an individual with the skills to lead a nation".
The Saldivar family scolds Briceno saying, quote, "Temperance and decorum are essential qualities which you failed to exit during this interaction… A leader should not spend their efforts attempting to destroy the reputation of their outstanding citizens, especially when those attempts are baseless… We can attest that Arthur is…a steadfast advocate for those Belizeans whose voices you have ignored..." End quote.
The letter sums it up saying, quote, "We are direct descendants of the first Belizeans who populated this country, and were instrumental in the political movement and advancement of Belize… Your statements and those of your legal advisor is an attack, not only on Arthur, but also on this dedicated Belizean family." End quote.
Their letter ends by demanding an apology from Briceno saying, "We are hopeful that you will search within yourself for discernment, and find the humility appropriate to apologize to Arthur, the Saldivar family, and every Belizean."
