Another PUP Against The ICJ
posted (August 21, 2018)
Last week, we told you how the members of PUP's Southern Caucus have strongly declared that they are against Belize going to the ICJ to resolve Guatemala's territorial claim over Belize. That's in stark contrast to Opposition Leader John Briceño's personal view that the ICJ is the best option that Belize has at this time, to resolve the dispute once and for all.

Well, PUP Cayo South Area Rep Julius Espat has posted his opinion on Facebook, and he agrees with the Southern Caucus that Belizeans should say "no" to the ICJ.

The former PUP Deputy of the West says, quote, "I have looked at the two sides of the issue when… And I am convinced that the risk of losing any part of our territory is too much to take. We have already gone through the difficult process of obtaining our Independence with our territory defined.

Espat believes that the territorial claim should not be the country's biggest priority right now. He ends his post saying, quote, "Democracy gives us the right to vote yes or no. I believe in democracy, and I reserve the right to vote no in the upcoming referendum." End quote.

By one count, as many as nine PUP parliamentarians may oppose going to the ICJ.
