Taiwan Loses Another Ally
posted (August 21, 2018)
Last week, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen was in Belize as part of a tour of South and Central America.

But, while she was shoring up support with friendly nations, her country continues to lose its precious few allies.

It was reported last night that El Salvador has broken relations with Taiwan and established ties with mainland China. It is the fifth diplomatic ally that Taiwan has lost to China since President Tsai, came to power in 2016. Taiwan is now left with only 17 allies, or countries that recognize its Independence.

Commenting on the Salvador defection, President Tsai Ing-wen said "Taiwan will not bow to pressure, describing the El Salvador move as further evidence of China's efforts to squeeze the island. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said at a press conference earlier Tuesday that Taiwan is not willing to continue with "money competition" and said El Salvador had been asking for "massive funding support" for a port development, but Taiwan was unable to assist.
