PUP Launch Its Own ICJ Campaign
posted (August 22, 2018)
The other big agenda item from this afternoon's meeting of the PUP National Executive was the party's own ICJ education campaign for their party supporters.

Opposition Leader John Briceño announced it last Friday, and today, the rest of the party discussed it in greater detail. Today, the Chairman of the Party said that they felt it necessary to do this especially because, from their perspective, the Government is failing in its responsibility to carry out a proper national education campaign:

Henry Charles Usher, Chairman - PUP
"The second important item on today's agenda was the beginning of the ICJ education campaign. As you may recall as well the party leader had enunciated a roadmap for the party's participation where this ICJ education campaign was concern and we are going to start that education campaign next month and carry it right through until December, perhaps even January, so the voters and supporters can be educated and informed of all the issues surrounding the ICJ and whether we go or not go."

"I think its important to point out that the party and the national executive felt that the government is failing in terms of its duty to educate the Belizean people on this issue. We are at the end of August, the education campaign has not started nationally and we are demanding that this campaign be done, so that the Belizean people know exactly the pros and the cons of whether we are going to go to the ICJ or not."

"Leading that education campaign will be Senator Eamon Courtenay and we will have participation by Deputy Cordel Hyde, also the Hon. Oscar Requena and other members that will be joining the team as we go forward. It will be done by caucus and we hope that each constituency get its own opportunity to have this education campaign done."

"The national executive also adopted a position within the party, because this matter is of such a personal nature that each person will vote their conscience on this issue. We will be going through with the education campaign, but certainly this is not an issue that you can either say yes you have to go this way or that way. We want each person to personally take it on their self, speak to their representative, speak to their constituency members and see what would be the best position going forward for them, for their country and for really the people of Belize."

The Chairman says that they will be releasing information on which part of the country they will be, and when, so that interested persons can attend accordingly.
