ZIKA No Longer A Significant Public Health Threat
posted (August 22, 2018)
In 2016, ZIKA burst unto the scene as the latest mosquito borne health scare to reach Belize. In addition to making you very sick, ZIKA was of greatest concern to pregnant mothers, because it could cause brain defects in unborn children.

It was confirmed in Belize in May of 2016 - and since then we haven't heard much about it. That's because health experts at the Caribbean Public Health Agency say that - after monitoring the 26 countries in the Caribbean, they can say that transmission of the ZIKA virus has been interrupted:...

Dr. C. James Hospedales- Executive Director, Head of the Caribbean Public Health Agency
"We have concluded a careful review of data for the last thirty months in the Caribbean and have come to the conclusion that Zika virus transmission has been interrupted in the region and that the risk to visitors and residents is low. From the high point in 2016, cases have declined to a sporadic and no cases in the last 12 months."

Zika reached its high point in Belize in mid 2016.
