PUP Area Rep to ASR/BSI: Shugga Pride? Shoulda Shame!
posted (August 23, 2018)

And the political candor continues with the PUP’s Orange Walk South Representative Jose Mai.  He’s an agronomist and a cane farmer who’s been consistently critical of ASR/BSI.

So, it wasn’t surprising today when he blasted BSI’s acquisition of a 1.2 million dollar tug - which can pull far more weight than the present fleet of tugs.  The vessel will be named “Shugga Pride” - but Mai says it’s a shameful investment:…

Hon. Jose Mai - PUP Shadow Minister of Agriculture
"How will this reduce the cost of local handling? Does the investment of a 1.2 million dollar steel tug; will that reduce the cost of local handling? And the answer is they don't know so why invest in it? We leave it as it is. My view is that they hold this local handling close to their chest and they don't want to let it do. It is my belief, many beliefs that is a revenue stream for ASR and that's why they don't want to let that go; so a million point 2 dollar investment in a tug that does not lower the cost of local handling means nothing to me or the farmer."

We note that there is a trial phase for the tug because BSI/ASR has to determine  the fuel costs for it.

Mai says ASR/BSI should have done a cost benefit analysis before acquiring the vessel.
