It happened close to his home. 22 year old Leroy Meighan had just left home - and was walking down the street when he was killed. We found out more from police, his family, and a friend:

"Mr. Meighan was walking from the corner of Central American Blvd towards Pelican Street to where he lives and just approaching number 19, a male person came out a small bushy area and fired several shots at him causing the fatal injuries."

"They left my mom without her son; my last little brother. His son is five and is named just like him Leroy Jr. And everybody recalls the last thing; everybody turned him over, turned him over because he can't breathe. And that was the last of it. We love LJ, everybody loves him. Just making them know they took away our loved one and it is not a very nice feeling to deal with."

"He is a very hard worker Jules. Honestly, from time to time people will say he was on the street but whenever a job comes up and somebody has the opportunity to give it to him he would be willing to take on any job. He would be 22 now but he was a friend nonetheless, a father, a brother, all the things that you can highlight about a good person you can highlight about the young-man. All of us have our flaws and due to certain circumstances we become victims to those and I guess that's what most I can say about him at the moment. He was just someone that was always willing to give a helping hand and like I said all the negative connotations that followed him, positive ones followed him as well."

As you heard, he was the father of a young child. Meighan had been pending charges for an attempted murder - which the victim has said he didn't commit.
