Mayor Says Cemetery Staff Situation Was Just a Misunderstanding
posted (September 5, 2018)
The PUP Leader did appear alongside his Belize City Mayor - who was never consulted on the state of emergency for select areas in his city.

That gave the media the opportunity to ask him about the council's Cemetery Staff who are represented by the Christian Workers Union.

This morning they refused to proceed to the Eternal Gardens Memorial Cemetery after the Council declined their request for food and subsistence. That would have meant no funerals could be held without the staff there. The mayor said it was quickly resolved:..

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor
"I believe that the matter was simply a case of miscommunication and it was resolve this morning with the City Administrator and the sanitation and cemetery workers. I believe that was resolved quite early this morning. It's a matter of just miscommunication. That's all I can say about it."

Reporter
"Well according to the release they sent after that meeting was that they still are not going to received subsistence and they don't feel that the issue is properly addressed at that meeting."

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor
"Not to my knowledge. I was briefed on that matter just before I left the office by the CA and she indicated to me that that matter has been resolved. It was a miscommunication."

Reporter
"According to them they say that the CBA general secretary was not allowed to stay for the meeting also."

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor
"But of course there is a protocol. You just can't walk into my office and attend my meetings. There is a protocol within the CBA which clearly states that if you have plans to attend any of our meetings we must be told about it prior to the meeting."

Reporter
"Regarding the cemetery workers from Belize City going to Eternal Garden, will they or won't they get any subsistence out there?"

Bernard Wagner
"That's resolve. They will get their subsistence."

A statement from the CWU after this morning's meeting says, quote, "Repeated efforts by CWU to engage with the BCC have seen the Council disrespectfully and discourteously ignore them or not respond in a timely fashion, or not addressing the concerns in any meaningful or significant way." End quote.
