As we told you last night, the Carnival King and Queen results are being audited. There were some discrepancies in the scoring and the wrong winners were announced. Well, last night on our Mas Camp prowl we caught up with Vice President of the Belize Carnival Associations Patrick Thompson. We asked him about it but he didn't want to get into too much detail since the audit is ongoing. He just discussed the competition criteria.
Patrick Thompson- V. P, Belize Carnival Association
"To speak on that, I cannot say much on that but at this moment they are still doing the auditing of the score and like what NICH said whenever that is through then we will know what the final result is."
Reporter
"Sir, but what is the policy? Because from what we understand, band leaders cannot question the results that the judges give."
Patrick Thompson
"Yes, the judges' results are final but then it is something different from that that they came across. But, like I said, I don't want to speak on that and say the wrong thing at this time. Just, let us all wait until the audit is finished and then we will get the official king and queens' results."
Reporter
"Could you say then, sir, what determines the result or who is the winner for a king and queen competition? Could you refresh the audience's memory as to what that is? What they look for?"
Patrick Thompson
"Well, there are two judging when it comes to king and queen. There is a pre-judging where the dance and the costume will tell the judge what the costume is all about and a little chit-chat about the costume. That is done on stage. Also, they check the height of the costume because all costume must be a specific height. Then we have the stage presentation. This is where the dancer must show that he or she is one with the costume. I want to say this, to people out there, please do not believe that if a person is not dancing the costume, in the sense that the judges are not looking at how that person can wiggle and jiggle as we may say. You have to play the costume not make the costume play you. It is a lot of things so it is just that these are the little things that we ask as well that the band leaders educate not only their revelers but their followers as well. So that, whenever the result is released and if they're there, they will see for themselves if it went fair or not."
