CITCO Snaps Back At CWU
posted (September 12, 2018)
Last night, we showed you the press conference hosted by the President of the Christian Workers Union. They complained that the Belize City Council continues to disregard and disrespect their role the resolution of industrial disputes between City Hall as employers, and the employees whose interest the union is obligated to protect.

Well, after the media kept pressing the Belize City Council for comment, they finally released a statement this evening.

It says quote, "The Belize City Council met with the staff of the Cemetery Department on Wednesday, September 5th to hear their concerns on three principal issues. These issues were addressed in the interim and the staff was assured that they would be resolved definitively by Tuesday, September 11th and that the outcome would be directly communicated to them in a staff meeting...

That meeting was held as promised; the issues were addressed definitively, and to the satisfaction of our employees. During the second meeting, the staff raised additional concerns, all of which the Council discussed with them….we are now committed to resolving (these issues). At no time during these meetings did the employees request the presence of a union representative...

The Council affirms its commitment to work with the Christian Workers Union (CWU) to protect, promote and improve the welfare of the staff; however, we also reserve the right to manage the affairs of the Council. The CWU has made erroneous claims against us, when in fact, we are merely effecting our management rights and responsibilities as agreed to in the CBA." End quote.

The Council has scheduled a press briefing for tomorrow in response to the CWU.
