Chamber Blows hot & Cold on SOE
posted (September 14, 2018)
Earlier on you heard the acting PM say he feels the State of of Emergency has done more good than harm. Well, the Chamber of Commerce weighed in today when it sent out a press release on the very polarizing public issue. The only thing is - their statement doesn't say too much about the state of emergency.

Instead, the release gives a long analysis of crime trends, going back to 2002 when the murder rate first spiked to 33 per hundred thousand citizens, and has been going up ever since.

The statement says, quote, "These unpleasant statistics show a national problem that has escalated under PUP and UDP administrations alike…the BCCI now calls on parliamentarians on both sides…to enact and enforce lasting measures to arrest the recent spike of violent crimes." End quote. It's a very vague suggestion, but we do know that the crime control and criminal justice amendment bill was passed earlier this year with sweeping new anti-crime and anti-gang measures. From there, the statement seems to conclude in favour of the state of emergency saying, quote, "The BCCI supports all measures aimed at permanently curbing the incidence of crime so long as those measures are within the framework of our laws and do not trample on our fundamental human rights."
