Another Sarstoon Showdown
posted (September 17, 2018)
On Friday's news, we showed you the latest confrontation between the Belize Territorial Volunteers and the Guatemalan armed forces at the mouth of the Sarstoon River.

Wil Maheia and his crew were preparing for last Saturday's Sarstoon Eco-Challenge. That involved planting a Belizean flag on the Sarstoon Island, which is a big no-no for the Guatemalans, who claim it as part of their territory.

The eco challenge features kayaking racers paddling all the way from Barranco Village to the mouth of the Sarstoon. Once there, the racers make a lap around Sarstoon Island, venturing close to the river border between Belize and Guatemala, and they finish back at the Barranco pier.

On Saturday, the Belizean participants attempted to do just that, but they met heavy resistance from the Guatemalan armed forces, which made them know that they were not welcomed.

Maheia's TV station, PGTV, was out on the water following the race, and they captured the stand off between the competitors and the Guat. Military personnel. He has produced his account of the way things played out at the river mouth, and tonight, we share a few choice excerpts of it with you. Here's what happened, from PGTV's perspective:

Maheia and the Territorial Volunteers have called a press conference for tomorrow, to voice their outrage at what happened.
