Businessman Succumbs 9 Days After Being Shot
posted (September 20, 2018)

9 days ago, we told you about the near fatal shooting of 43 year-old Jing Hu Wu, a Chinese Belizean businessman from Mahogany Street in Belize City. On the 10th of September, when everyone was enjoying their holiday, Wu was on the job, and he went to Lovely Lane to make a delivery at a shop on that street. He was in his Ford Ranger pick-up, and his employee, Rogelio Selgado was with him.

Around midday, he was making deliveries as usual - but it’s in gang turf - and when Wu was driving past an overgrown lot a shooter sprang out and took aim at Selgado.  As soon as Selgado heard the sound of gunshots, he ducked and tried to warn Wu, but it was too late. Wu, who is also known as “Ivan”, suffered injuries to the right side of his rib cage, his right upper arm, and his left arm. He was rushed to the KHMH, and he clung to life for 9 days until last night, when he passed away.

Today, the police told us they have no one detained for this shooting turned murder:

Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB
"Reference to the shooting of Mr. Wu that happened on the tenth of September, unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries last night about, minutes to 1:00. At this moment the body is at the morgue where a post mortem will be conducted sometime today. 06:12

"You had said that how it was motivated by gang rivalry where it was his sideman that they wanted to, to get to, Mr. Selgado, I believe. Any update on that? Anybody detained?"

Alejandro Cowo
"Well, as I mentioned the last time, yes, we had two persons detained but we had to release them after being interviewed, noh. But one of them still remains as the prime suspect."

Reporter
"Now that he has died and it’s a murder investigation, will these people be re-detained? What is the plan for investigators?"

Alejandro Cowo
"Well, we are still working on that case, we are still speaking to persons that were in that area, about coming forward to cooperate along with us - to see if this can lead to somebody being detained and later charged for that murder, noh?"

So, as you heard Wu, an innocent businessman, was killed in a shooting that he had nothing to do with, a fact that his friends and family will have to come to terms with. Today, we spoke with the Chairman of the Belize Chinese Association, of which Wu was a member. He told us that the hope is that Wu’s employee, at whom the gunman was aiming, will come forward and help the police bring this killer to justice:

Edmund Quan - Chairman, Belize Chinese Association
"Well I got the news this morning as a wake up - the family texted me that Mr. Wu had passed away last night due to his injuries."

Daniel Ortiz
"Now do you know what those injuries were exactly?"

Edmund Quan
"Well he had two gunshot wounds to the body, the police have finished conducting the post mortem but I haven't gotten the report."

Daniel Ortiz
"Mr. Wu was killed in a shooting where the gunman wasn't even targeting him."

Edmund Quan
"The person that was working with Mr. Wu, I'm not sure if he testified and pinpointed who did the shooting because I mean I don't see why he needs to fear because it could have been him in the morgue right now. He just needs to stand up, be strong deal with what you have to deal with. All I can say he was the wrong place, wrong time, wrong company. It's a tragic moment, tragic thing to happen - the killing needs to stop in Belize, it doesn't matter innocent or the intended target, the killing needs to stop."

Wu’s family has declined interview requests for fear of retaliation from whoever the gunman is that shot him.
