Gang Figure Shot, Police Try To Suppress Retaliation
posted (September 20, 2018)

Tonight Northside Belize City police are on high alert for a possible retaliation after a gang figure was shot this morning. It happened around 10:30 when 25 Year Old Michael Arnold known as “T-T” was at the corner of Lancaster and Yorke Street. Police told us more:…

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB
"Just before 11, I think it was about 10:40 or 10:45, police responded to shots being fired on York Street. They visited the hospital where they observed Michael Arnold with an apparent gunshot wound to the left side of his buttocks. He is presently at the hospital in a stable condition. What we learnt is that he was walking on York Street and upon reaching the corner with York and Hunter's Lane, he was approached by three male persons, one of which pulled out a firearm and fired several shots in his direction causing the above mentioned injuries."

Reporter
"There are reports that Mr. Arnold may have been the gunman in the incident involving Mr. Jing Wu, who I believe, you were going to address next that died. Can you say whether he was a suspect in that case?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"He was detained and he was interviewed but he had to be released because of a lack of evidence."

Reporter
"Is he known to the Police?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Well, of course, Mr. Michael Arnold is a very known guy in that area."

5 expended nine millimeter shells were recovered from the scene. Police have a known suspect.

As Cowo noted, Arnold was shot in the buttocks and his injury is not considered life threatening.  But, as we said, police do fear that lives are in danger because Arnold is a major gang figure from the Victoria Street area - and he has many rivals who live in very close proximity and have their own turf. Police believe retaliation could be imminent and have detained a number of persons. That area is also covered by police checkpoints because there are so many warring groups living close to each other.
