One Year Old Drowns In Vat
posted (September 24, 2018)
A 1 year old baby boy drowned in a vat this weekend. It happened in the Port Loyola Area of Belize City at Krooman Lagoon on Saturday night. Now the family says they have been getting a lot of hate messages on social media, calling them negligent. Well, the baby's father spoke to us off camera today to set the record straight. He says it was an accident and it happened so fast. The baby's mom didn't see when the baby slipped away. Here that story.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
Today Alexie Sanchez and her family spent most of their day inside their Krooman Lagoon home - enfolded in bitterness and sorrow.

Sanchez's baby boy Kelvin Sanchez drowned in this vat near their house. The tragedy happened on Saturday night around 6:00.

Voice of: Willy Quinocte, Father
"When we came home, I told my wife to go ahead and take the baby and go to the back and I will meet you right now with the bags."

"Then when I went inside, my wife was preparing tea and I asked where was the baby and she said right beside me so when I looked around to see him I conscious that he is missing. Then I decided he is not nowhere in the house because the house has no partition and the only partition is the bathroom."

"When we notice he was missing I decided to come to the front of the neighbor to see if he came this side or stayed this side and she said no he is not around here so when I went back and something told me look in the vat so when I looked in the vat I see a red shirt, then I took out my phone."

Quinocte was too choked up to say it but he saw his baby boy face down in the vat. He quickly snatched him out of the water.

Voice of: Willy Quinocte, Father
"I was able to resuscitate him but all he did was spit out the water and I continue do CPR until my sister in law call the ambulance."

But it was too late for little Kelvin. He didn't make it. Now the family is trying to figure out what exactly happened.

Courtney Weatherburne, reporter
"Do you know how he fell in there I understand he is usually afraid to be near the vat."

Voice of: Willy Quinocte, Father
"Yes this is what is puzzling me because when I do see him near the verandah he doesn't come near to the vat any at all but there are times when the dog is there, the only next thing I could say is that the dog was there and he was playing with the dog and the dog just decide to jump up and frighten him and he just drop in."

The family says it was just a terrible accident no one saw coming - an accident that has taken the life of the couple's only son.

Voice of: Willy Quinocte, Father
"My wife she can't take herself right now we still can't believe this happen."

Little Kelvin would have been two next month. The father says he normally closes the vat but since it was raining that night, he left it open to fill up.
