Special Needs Man Shot
posted (September 24, 2018)
And, there was also a shooting in Belize City - fortunately this one wasn't very serious. But, the man who was injured was a blameless victim, actually a special needs individual. Police told us more:..

ASP Alejandro Cowo- OC, CIB, Belize City
"On Friday at about 8:35 pm police visited the Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital where they observed Mr. Leroy Waller, 37 years old Belizean of Neal's Pen Road, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the left side of his neck. What police have gathered so far is that Mr. Waller was walking on Neal's Pen Road heading towards the boulevard when he was approached by someone who came from behind and fired several shots at him. This happened in front of 187 Neal Pen Road where a wake was taking place. Fortunately he was admitted and discharged on the same night. His injury was a minor one."

Reporter
"Sir, from what we understand is that Mr. Waller is not the type of person who would have enemies because he has some type of mental deficiency."

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Yes, the man is a person with special needs. Yes, we know that he was not the target; the target was somebody who was standing at the entrance of where the wake was happening. Unfortunately, Mr. Waller was right beside him when the shooting happened."

Jules Vasquez- Reporter
"Is it an area that is becoming a problem similar to those that were included as sout side emergency zones?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Well, this incident from Friday, it occurred yes on Pen Road but the persons involved are not from that area. Yes we are concerned of the increase of shootings in there and hence the reason that police were placed there to put special emphasis at certain locations around Pen Road because it is not the entire Pen Road"
