Is Claver Properly Governed?
posted (September 26, 2018)
Another big issue the Claver College Extension teachers have is that they have a two-person board. The say a proper board should have a teacher, ministry and church representative, and that is not the case. The teachers are not happy that Chairperson Alamilla made what they call a unilateral decision that affected 95 percent of the staff. Here are their points on this topic.

Vanna Noralez - Claver College Ext., Teacher Rep.
"Let me just point out also that our board is currently only two people- our chairperson and our treasurer. Now, that is also something that we have been pushing to get alleviated because we need to have a board that is made out of more than two people to make the decisions that will benefit our teachers our staff and our institution on a whole."

"Is it true that these members are not there? So, if that is the case, would it be a true statement to say that the decision was made only by yourself and the treasurer that is right now in place?"

Lisel Alamilla - Chairperson, Claver College Extension
"Yes, because those are the members that are active. We have other members who aren't responding to it- to the communications. So, what do you do then? Do you just sit there and do nothing? Do you not open school back? Do you not...what do you do? And the Ministry is informed of what is happening and in fact the Ministry totally understands in discussions that we have said look, 'this, the way they are setting up the board doesn't really work. The way the boards are constituted in other secondary schools doesn't work. These are adults. So, we were the ones who said, 'we need students to sit on the board,' because they are adults."

Alamilla came on as chairperson in November 2017. She says when she got that position she had to organize and clean up the affairs at the college extension. She says she has made many improvements at the school.

So at this point, Alamilla says she is open to discussion with the teachers who are willing to reconsider and sign the new contract but if not, she will find new teachers for classes on Monday the 1st of October.
