Fundraising For Grieving Cop

Earlier this week, we brought you extensive coverage of the tragedy which happened in Orange Walk last Sunday morning, when a father and 3 of his children died in a fire which destroyed their home.

Alfredo Petillo and his 3 children, Kevawn Clarke, Jayda Petillo, and Mia Petillo, ages 10 to 14, were trapped in the blaze and they lost their lives. The Petillo family continues to mourn their untimely passing, and 11 other family members are trying to rebuild their lives after they lost everything in the blaze.

Among the victims devastated by the fire is Corporal Wilfredo Petillo, who works at Eastern Division Region 1. Today, in a strong showing of fraternity, his police colleagues all across the country held barbecue sales to raise money to provide him with small relief aid. 

We stopped by the Raccoon Street barbecue fundraiser, and we spoke with one of the public relations officer about the initiative. Here’s what he had to say about why the department felt moved to assist one of their own:

And top prevent a recurrence of such a tragedy, today in Orange Walk a meeting was held with a multi agency group including fire department and BWSL supervisor.  They committed to several recommendations and actions to address the flaws in the delivery of service.
