Convicted Killer “Life” Salazar Rejected By CCJ
posted (October 2, 2018)
A convicted killer has appealed his conviction to the highest court in the land, and lost.

Today, via teleconference, the Caribbean Court of Justice upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal and rejected the appeal of Dionicio "Life" Salazar.

Salazar was convicted for the June 2010 murder of Marlon Rivera in San Ignacio. Now that he has exhausted his final appeal he can only hope that new sentencing guidelines will reduce his time in prison from a life sentence. His Attorney Anthony Sylvestre discussed what's next for him:..

Anthony Sylvestre - Salazar's Attorney
"The CCJ confirmed the decision of the Court of Appeal. What the Court of Appeal had done is it had dismissed his appeal in relation to conviction and they had allowed this appeal in relation to sentence. So, now he has to be taken back to the Supreme Court and given the new sentencing provisions related to persons who are convicted for murder then he would now be re-sentenced. So, whereas previously he was sentenced to a finite life sentence now he would be able to receive, if the judge who hears his matter is of such a view, receive a fixed term; whether it be thirty years or twenty-five years or whatever the case may be. So, that is the next stage of this process."

Jules Vasquez - Reporter
"His conviction has been upheld multiple times, he is a convicted murderer, has he, at any point, given a statement of remorse or a statement of saying, 'okay, I did this and I am sorry'?"

Anthony Sylvestre
"Well, not to my knowledge. But, to your point, there is at some stage a process where, as indicated, he will be re-sentenced. So, certainly I would suspect that that has to be brought there at the mitigation and sentencing phase."

Salazar will be called to the Supreme Court to be sentenced at a later date. He can expect a sentence of 25 to 30 years.
