State of Emergency Prisoner Released
posted (October 3, 2018)
The state of public emergency in two areas of the southside was declared 30 days ago on the 4th of September. The proclamation specified that it was for a period of only 30 days - and that comes to an end at midnight. So, everyone is asking, will the more than 60 men now be set free?

Well, there is late word to 7News that this could be underway at the prison at this very minute - and we are monitoring it closely.

We know that no extension has been given, and even the Attorney General - who is never shy - told us today - he is waiting on word from the Minister of National Security:...

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"It is 30 days today October 3rd. What happens now?"

Mike Peyrefitte, Attorney General
"I would prefer the government to speak with one voice and so I will leave that to national security. I'll prefer for them to answer how they will proceed after this."

Reporter
"The matter didn't come up in cabinet?"

Mike Peyrefitte, Attorney General
"I don't discuss what happens in cabinet."

Reporter
"The CEO for KOLBE Foundation Mr. Murillo says that according to the letter from the Ministry of National Security point number 5 states that he will not release anyone until he receives specific orders, not orders regarding state of emergency, but from national security. Will they be release today?"

Mike Peyrefitte, Attorney General
"I don't know, that's why I pointed to national security."

Reporter
"You are the attorney general, you should know."

Mike Peyrefitte, Attorney General
"I'm saying we would prefer the government to speak with one voice and I would prefer for you to check with the Minister of National Security and or the deputy commissioner of police Mr. Chester Williams."

Again, late word to 7NEws is that specialized police units have been sent to the prison to transfer the 64 detainees to the city.

Attorney and Human Rights activist Audrey Mature today sent a letter to the press saying quote, "to hold (the detainees)) even a day or an hour beyond the 30 days would be a miscarriage of justice and yet one more violation against their constitutional rights…"

She goes on, "Having not heard any resolution to extend the proclamation, at the last Sitting of the House…and having not received nay further public communication indicating the intent to extend, it is expected that the release of 64 detainees will be effective today…"

We'll have an update by the end of tonight's news.
