Sankat Family Statement
posted (October 8, 2018)
3 weeks ago, we told you about Nishal Sankat, the son of the UB President, Clement Sankat, who got into some serious trouble with Florida law enforcement after he allegedly tried to steal a commercial aircraft from the Orlando Melbourne International Airport. Well, the 22 year-old University student, who was studying aviation management, will be deported back to his home country of Trinidad and Tobago.

American news outlets say that on last Monday, he pleaded guilty to burglary to a conveyance. He was sentenced to time served for the 12 days he spent in custody, and he was ordered to pay $909.45, which was the cost of the investigation conducted by the airport's police.

Local and federal authorities say that Sankat acted alone, and was suffering from depression and mental health issues when he boarded the American Airlines Airbus A321. He hopped over the airport fence, and entered a restricted area of the airport. He was caught in the aircraft by 2 maintenance employees, but his intrusion at the airport caused a 5-hour security lockdown, while the authorities swept the compound for explosives and other threats to public safety.

Sankat's family sent out a press release this weekend, which says, quote, "Professor Clement Sankat and his family have been reunited with their son, Nishal, and would like to thank the Almighty for his gracious intervention... A special thanks is extended to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, in particular, to The Minister of Education and The Minister of National Security and to colleagues across the private and public sectors, family members and friends... For their professionalism in this matter, the family is thankful to the State and Federal authorities in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida and also to the representatives of the Government of Canada who took a keen interest in our son's welfare. The family is especially grateful to his Distinguished Attorney in Melbourne, Mr. Greg Eisenmenger for his outstanding efforts."
