Rapist’s Appeal Denied
posted (October 9, 2018)
This evening, the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal of Harrim Perez, a convicted rapist and upheld his 8-year sentence.

Perez was found guilty of the offence on July 30th, 2012. The victim, who was 25 years-old at the time, testified that Perez volunteered to give her a ride from Blackman Eddy to Cayo, which is when he started to demand sex. He turned off the highway, and threatened shoot her if she didn't give him what he wanted. Fearing for her life, she removed her clothing, and that's when Perez raped her.

She only escaped by telling him that a vehicle was coming, and when he looked to see for himself, she opened the door and dashed off. She was picked up by a truck driver who took her to Santa Elena.

At the court of Appeal, several months ago, his attorney Oscar Selgado, submitted several grounds of appeal to the panel of judges. He told the court that, at best, the evidence in the original trial could not support a conviction because rape was not proven.

After consideration, the Court of Appeal handed down their ruling today completely disagreeing with all Perez's grounds of appeal, and they upheld his conviction and sentence. The prosecution was represented by Senior Crown Counsel Sheneiza Smith.
