Fire Dept. Says Not So Sure of Cigarette Fire Starter
posted (October 11, 2018)

But the Fire Department isn’t so sure that he was smoking.  Today, operations officer Benesford Matura said they are still investigating:…

Benesford Matura - Operation Officer, BNFS
"Apparently while filling the van, there was a flash, a leak somewhere with the butane and it flashed and caused the butane tank that was placed at the rear inside the van, behind the last seat to explode. The only person that got injured was the said owner and driver Mr. Rosales. He got burns basically to the upper body, face, two arms and his chest area."

Reporter
"Is there anything because from what police told us earlier today, something about a cigarette was lit and that's what caused the fire."

Benesford Matura
"It's true that we also heard of that but our officers are still investigating. After an interview with Mr. Rosales we will come to that conclusion."

Jules Vasquez
"Should more care be exercised at these depots?"

Benesford Matura
"Yes, we need to practice and exercise more care, especially on the side of the companies that have these depots need to practice more care and safety because it only takes one false move or one mistake and we have come to interview me before for several of these butane explosions where somebody made the wrong move or didn't adhere to safety precautions and end up with some sort of explosion or fire."

We spoke to Rosales’s daughter who told us her father does not smoke - and stressed that the entire story about his smoking causing the explosion is just plain wrong.

She added that he was burnt to the face and his entire body and remains hospitalized.  Rosales is from Bella Vista Village.
