BNTU Swinging For Stevedores

The utility workers came out yesterday saying they support the stevedores in their industrial dispute with the port of Belize.  And, now, the Belize National Teachers Union has done the same.  

The BNTU sent out a release today saying “we at the BNTU fully understand…the frustration of stevedores…the BNTU stands firm in its continued support of our brothers and sisters of the CWU and wish them well on the road to finding a resolution to the current impasse….the BNTU…is prepared to take the necessary…action to ensure their negotiations conclude in a timely manner. We will not sit idly by and watch our brothers continue to be disadvantaged..”

As we have reported - the Labour Minister Dr. Carla Barnett has agreed to get both sides to meet next week.  She has refused to pronounce on the single issue of contention, which is the hours of work.  The labour law stipulates that they must not work more than 15 hours in any shift, but the Attorney General has advised the Labour Minister that the law gives her the discretion to make an exception for certain kinds of work
