Mile 8 Housebreaker Caught on Camera
posted (October 11, 2018)

35 year-old Mario Zelaya, a wood carver of a Raccoon Street Extension address in Belize City, was taken to court for breaking into a man's home at mile 8 an a half on the George Price Highway.

The incident occurred on October 8 at the home of 34 year old Manuel Castillo in  Sunset Park on the Western Highway - and it was caught on camera.

Castillo left his house along with his wife and their two children around 7:20 a.m., to go to Belize City. His house is equipped with two surveillance cameras that he and his wife can monitor via their cell phones. He said that at about 12:30 p.m., his wife called him and told him that she noticed that one of the cameras was pointed in the wrong direction. As you can see, it is barely capturing the image of the alleged housebreaker.

He checked it out, confirmed her suspicions, and he called his in-laws who live in the area. They went to check and found that his house was being burglarized. Castillo went home and found that two glass louvers from a window near to the kitchen were missing, and two lunch kits for his children were removed. He also viewed the surveillance footage for the camera that covers the yard, and he saw two men on the tape. The police viewed the cameras and reported that they were able to identify Zelaya, who he was seen shoving his hand through a window of the house. As a result, Zelaya was arrested and charged.

He was arraigned on the charge of burglary when he appeared today before Magistrate Emerson Banner. Zelaya pleaded not guilty to the offense ,and he was offered a bail of $5,000. His case was adjourned until December 17.
