Riding For Prostate Health And Awareness
posted (October 11, 2018)

It’s Cancer Awareness month - and this weekend the focus is on prostate cancer in men.

That’s the object of the cancer ride - which is in its third year. Organizer Heather Reneau told us more:…

Heather Reneau - Senior Administrator, BCS
"We have our prostate cancer awareness ride which coming up this weekend, it's called our cancer challenge and it takes place this Saturday leaving Drums of our Fathers in Dangriga and we go to San Ignacio, the Macal River Park and then we leave from the Benque border the following morning at 6 AM and we come to Belize. So yes it's a staggering journey but this ride was actually created to mimic what a person goes through when battling cancer. It's not just a one hiccup or one hurdle; you might have many hurdles when battling cancer. You have financial difficulties, you have emotional problems, you have spiritual problems, you have relationship problems. So cancer devastates and entire family."

Jules Vasquez
"A part from the very powerful and potent and painful symbolism, you're doing it also for fund raising."

Heather Reneau
"Yes because the cancer society we do need funds to support person affected by cancer and what happens to a man when he's affected by cancer and don't have the funds for prostate cancer treatment or cannot access chemotherapy? So we also have to say thank you to our partners in Dangriga that whoever we send down there, that they are able to support them; even sometimes when it's very hard to find the funds. So activities like these, we have a minimal registration fee of 25 dollars per day and it's a contribution to the cause. Well if you don't want to ride and you just want to support the cause, we ask that you make a contribution to our office where you can come right in; we have commemorative t-shirts and we will provide you with those t-shirts for ample cost of 20 dollars."

As you heard, the ride starts on Saturday in Dangriga.
