City Man Plunges Into OW River
posted (October 16, 2018)
A Belize City man drove off a bridge in San Antonio Orange Walk and plunged to his death in the river. Police told us it happened on Saturday night:...

ASP Alejandro Cowo- OC, CIB
"On Saturday the 13th of October 2018 at about 11:30 pm, acting upon information received, Orange Walk police visited San Antonio Village at the main entrance of the village where the San Antonio Bridge is located. Villagers informed the police that they heard a loud bang and when they came out to inquire what was happening, they saw a vehicle submerging into the river. Police and civilians from the village went to the river and were able to take out a person that was inside of the river. By the time the man was pulled out he had already died. That male person was later identified as Francis Paquil of a Belize City address."

Jules Vasquez
"Are there any details known about his direction or his last whereabouts?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"He was driving from Orange Walk towards the village when he apparently lost control of the vehicle, knocked the railing and went into the river."

Jules Vasquez
"Does anyone know if he had been socializing earlier in the night?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"It is something that we have not established, but we know that he had passed police checkpoint in the Orange Walk area by the Toll Bridge. That was sometime in the night. That is why we were able to trace the vehicle and we traced his address in Belize City."

Jules Vasquez
"Did the officers at the checkpoint remark on his fitness to drive, that sort of thing?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Well, at the time he was in a sober state."

The bridge is noted to be dangerous.
