C.A. Asylum Seekers Stopped At Western Border
posted (October 18, 2018)

There's an interesting situation developing at Belize's western border tonight.  A caravan of five buses with Central Americans pulled up at the border this afternoon into evening.  We're told the persons - seen sitting outside the Benque Free Zone -  are requesting entry into Belize as a church group that visits regularly. But because of the concerns right now about Caravans of asylum seekers heading out of Honduras, the Immigration Department has not allowed them to enter.  Central Americans do not require a visa to visit Belize - but these busses have caught the attention of Belmopan because Honduran Caravans of asylum seekers have caused a political uproar in the US.  Belize doesn't want to send the signal that asylum seekers heading north are welcomed.

7news has confirmed that the Immigraiton Department has refused them entry at this time.

We'll keep monitoring the situation, but at this time the busses remain on the Guatemalan side.
