How The Standard Is Set
posted (October 26, 2018)
Today, the Belize Bureau of Standards joined the rest of the world in observing World Standards Day.

Now, you may not think too much about how standards in the goods and services you depend on has improved, but, the Bureau makes it their business. They police quality control to ensure greater reliability and safer practices for the general public.

The theme of World Standards Day is "International Standards and the Fourth Industrial Revolution". We stopped by, and asked the Bureau's Director to explain what that means:

Jose Trejo - Director, Belize Bureau of Standards
"World Standards Day is a day that we commemorate the development of standards at the international level. You have standards developers around the world, all parts of the world, developed, developing countries that sit together in technical committees to develop standards for goods and services across the world. So, every year, national standards bodies across the globe took to this day to celebrate Worlds Standards Day under different themes."

"This year is the 4th Industrial Revolution, which is the theme for this year."

Daniel Ortiz, reporter
"Why refer to it as the 4th Industrial Revolution?"

Jose Trejo
"We're living in a world that is constantly evolving and evolving with technology. So, that the advances that we are seeing in phones, computers, cars, automated self-driven cars, those are all things that are relevant to standards. There is no way that you can get to that point without the development of standards. It just doesn't happen that way. It just don't pop up like that. In the background are the standards developers, your industrial experts, your scientists, all the people who come together to help develop, even if it is a clause in the standard. They are the ones who are constantly working towards ensuring that those standards are developed, introduced, and used nationally, regional, and internationally."

As part of their celebration of World Standards Day, the Bureau launched its upgraded website.
