Tonight, the Faber's Road community remains in shock - trying to come to terms with an unspeakable, unthinkable tragedy that played out early this morning like a scene from a horror movie. A city council worker, Samuel August allegedly killed his 5 year old son Samir and the boy's grandmother, 53 year old Louise Young. He crushed them with a backhoe after ramming it into the home where they slept. Baby Samir died instantly while Young held on as long as she could before she passed away. A 13 year old girl is also critical in the hospital. Homes and other belongings are wrecked and there are no easy answers for this act of domestic madness. We start off with a run-down of what happened this morning to put this swirl of events into context. Courtney Weatherburne has the story.

Little Samir's crushed body was found here buried in the concrete rubble. His beloved grandmother's mangled body was flung not too far away in the yard.
For the family, this morning's ghastly scene will haunt them forever.

"My next cousin was in the water and I spoke to her and I said "Louise, wake up, talk to me. Stay awake for me. She said that she could not breathe softly. We put a board underneath her head because we couldn't move her. The position she was in she looked broken up."

"And the baby, where was your little cousin?"

"In the cement that was broken up on the ground. His head was cracked."
This senseless attack began this morning after 2:00 when Little Samir's father, Samuel August rammed into Young's home with this Backhoe - Young, Samir and three other kids were asleep inside.

"I heard a backhoe and I was like how are they working so late. So I looked through my bathroom window and I saw the backhoe coming towards Faber's Road and I heard a bang. So I say he must have run into a vehicle. So I came on the verandah when I heard somebody screamed and when I look across the railing I saw like when a child playing with a toy how he spun it."
After fatally injuring little Samir, August continued to spin the backhoe wildly, He swerved into the neighbor's yard, collapsing the entire front portion of his house,
And gouging the side of his white van. But August didn't stop there, 13 year old Britney Craig, who lived with Young, ran out of the house and August turned the backhoe around, and raced after her down the street to Tracey Slusher's home.

"And he chased her until he reached in front of our yard and make the impact and came in and broke down the whole of my mom's kitchen."
"Her hand was broken and the side of her face was dig up."
But it took the heroic actions of the neighbor, Carl Butler to shock August out of this murderous rampage.

"He took off against me and crushed the van against the house, myself inside. I managed to come out and he was still on the backhoe apparently or not apparently, evidently coming into the yard again towards me and that was when I took my licensed weapon and fired several shots at him. I am not sure if any shots caught him. I don't think it did, because he continued around the lane."

"Do you think if you hadn't fired those shots, you think he would have came at you, maybe injured you and injured other people as well?"

"Yes, certainly. And that's the reason I fired the shots, because it seems that nothing else was going to stop him."
Turns out Butler did hit August and August drove as far as he could on the next lane and stopped here - plowing down this fence - the end of a harrowing Halloween tale.
