posted (October 31, 2018)
Leader Briceno also spoke about Health Minister Pablo Marin. As we reported last night - he has signed letters - dating Back to 2016 supporting marijuana or hemp plantations for medicinal use. Briceno says that was unlawful:..

Hon. John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition
"As you all know, you've seen this. 3 letters have been so far have been floating out there from the minister of health, pretty much giving permission to grow marijuana in Belize for something that is illegal. What he did is something illegal. So if he has done this on his own, then he needs to resign from cabinet, because he has taken an illegal act. But also connect the dots ladies and gentlemen."

A lengthy release from the Ministry of Health this evening says, quote, "The Ministry of Health takes this opportunity to clarify misinformation being spewed by the opposition regarding two letters signed by the Minister of Health Hon. In the letter dated 10th February 2016 addressed to Mr. Zev Ben Yosef, there was no mention made of the cultivation of marijuana. The meeting was centered on cannabis farming for the purpose of medicinal use as research…The use of controlled drugs has been legal in Belize since 1990. This proposed investment was in compliance with the Misuse of Drugs Act…In the letter dated 14th October 2017 addressed to Mr. Marco Caruso, once again no mention was made of the cultivation of marijuana. The proposed project was for the cultivation of hemp…The Ministry of Health will continue to entertain ideas, which can be beneficial both to the economy of Belize and health of Belizeans, once they are within the confines of the law." End quote.
