Mayor Refuses Comment On Rum Bottle In Council’s Backhoe
posted (November 1, 2018)

So, what does the City council have to say about August - he was the backhoe driver assigned to the night shift in the Sanitation Department.  But he is also an employee who has psychiatric problems - and was driving a piece of heavy equipment drunk.  What kind of counselling or supervision do they have for employees in such a situation?

But there are deeper concerns about the council's supervision of its staff.

And that may explain why today Mayor Bernard Wagner did not want to talk about the fact that a quart of Gold Rum was seen under the driver's seat.  Here's what he said - and didn't say:…

Reporter
"The backhoe was used to tragically to cause so much havoc 24 hours ago, your comments on the situation?"

Bernard Wagner - Belize City Mayor
"I believed we sent out a press release on that matter already and that is where we sit with it."

Reporter
"So you wouldn't care to comment?"

Bernard Wagner
"Not at this point in time."

Reporter
"The press release did not address the issue of liquor or alcohol being inside of one of the pieces of equipment that was used. Care to comment?"

Bernard Wagner
"I couldn't comment on that, I have no knowledge of that. It's actually the first time I'm hearing of it."

Reporter
"There were pictures that showed that there was actually rum inside the vehicle."

Bernard Wagner
"I can't comment on that my good friend (laugh)."

The council has moved quickly to repair the damaged homes - since their employee did it with the council's backhoe.

In a release yesterday, the council said, quote, "All our responses (to the tragedy) are being done without prejudice."
