New Gen Statisticians
posted (November 8, 2018)

Last week, we showed you highlights of the University of Belize's Annual report 2016 – 2017. Well, now they have a couple more accomplishments to add to their next year in review. Today, UB launched its first bachelors in Statistics as well as a professional certificate in GIS. We dropped by the Radisson to find out more about these new programs.

Julianne Pasos - Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology
"We have our bachelors in Statistics program which is a 4 year degree program and its main focus is statistics. The program came about through our curriculum review, we were doing a review of our bachelors in Mathematics program and we found out from stakeholders that there is a great need for statistics. The program offers a diversity in statistics, you will notice the program encompasses economic statistics, demographic statistics, we have different areas of statistics, we developed it in partnership with SIB in that the same time they are trying to establish the national statistics system so in doing that there were different areas that they recognized we needed.

"The certificate in GIS, GIS, the Geographic Education System is budding, something that is new, it is being implemented, it has so many implementation avenues, you can implement it in environments, you can implement in any area, mapping is a big thing we have Dr. Santos Chicas and Antonio Cano who were instrumental in developing this, now they have the expertise. Now in developing this program what we were looking for is to do training so that it becomes more known in the country and we said people don't want to come and invest a long time to do this, so we said a 1 year program, a 1 year program and both of these programs I have to say, we are looking for people who are in service, so we are offering the programs as night programs and evening programs so that they can come in and do the course. We also believe these programs are new to the region so we are hoping to attract some Caribbean students and even further away so even international students with these programs, they are solid programs and they have been reviewed internationally."

UB is already accepting applications for these programs for the January intake. The bachelors in Statistics is $116 per credit hour.

Also, as it relates to another UB program, earlier this week they sent a release saying that the bachelor of Social Work is now accredited in the US.  With this, former and current graduates of this program can seek advanced degrees in the USA.
