Big Fuss Over Sarteneja Plane, Nothing Illicit Proven
posted (November 12, 2018)
And while police can't say if that group was getting ready for a plane to land, the fact is, all of Belize is on the lookout for narco-planes.

That may be why some alarm was raised this weekend when a Cessna 150 was spotted in the seaside village of Sarteneja, Corozal. The single engine aircraft was around for 6 hours, but police could not make an intercept. Assistant Commissioner Myvett explained:

ACP Joseph Myvette- Head of NCIB
"Sometime after 3 pm on yesterday's date Corozal police was made aware that an aircraft had landed on the Sarteneja airstrip. As a result the officer posted that Sarteneja was deployed to the area to make checks. In the same process other officers from the north were deployed to the same area however the officers stationed in Sarteneja, whilst going in the direction of the airstrip, saw that the aircraft had taken off. It is a single-engine aircraft that seemingly was there from sometime around 9 am and took off sometime after 3 pm on yesterday's date."

"Has the investigation turned up any reason why, with a police officer in sarteneja, nobody knew that the plane had landed at least six hours before people were actually deployed?"

ACP Joseph Myette
"Actually, someone in that specific area owns one of those single-engine aircraft. So, it did not arise any suspicion."

Reporter
"At this time, based on the preliminary investigation, do police believe that something illicit happened?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"No, we do not know at this point in time and we do not want to speculate."

Best information says the plane is locally registered to a Mennonite interest out of the Blue Creek area.

As Myvett said, there's no evidence that the aircraft was involved in anything illegal. He did not have information on whether a flight plan had been filed with the Civil Aviation Department.
