COMPOL Turns To US For Help with Human Traffic
posted (November 12, 2018)
Belize continues to try to get out of that "Tier 3" human trafficking status.

Last week, Police Commissioner Allen Whylie was in Washington DC, where he signed an agreement for the Belize Police Department and the Human Trafficking Institute. The Institute will train the officers who make up the department's Specialized Human Trafficking Unit, which was formed earlier this year.

A press release from the Government says that the agreement provides for office space for this specialized unit, and the staff of the Human Trafficking Institute, which will provide ongoing, technical investigative assistance in trafficking in persons cases. This office space will also serve as a secure, private location for the interviewing of victims and witnesses to trafficking in persons.

This 4-year agreement outlines a shared financing structure between Belize Police and the Human Trafficking Institute. Both sides will share the costs initially, but later in the life of the agreement, the Belize Police will assume increasing responsibility for the costs of this particular venture.
