Is the Political Playing Field Level For Both Sexes?
posted (November 13, 2018)
And while that activity book is to get children involved and engaged, what about women in politics? They make up more than 50% of the population, but women make up less than 7% of the representation in the House.

And, in terms of political candidates, the PUP will end up with one for the 2020 general election, while the UDP may only end up with two - so that is three out of a total of 62 candidates. That's a dismal 5%.

So, what is it with women and politics? Is there really a glass ceiling? OR is the game made so crooked by those male politicians that only they can thrive in it?

We asked the recently defeated Carla Barnett - who said politics in its present form is a man's world:

Hon. Dr. Carla Barnett, Lost convention
"It's important for me and it's important for this country for there to be a greater role for women in decision making and the highest level of decision making is in government. That's where policies are made.. That's where the future of the country is determined and women are not adequately represented there."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"As a deputy leader of the UDP, the UDP needs women candidates. Dr. Carla Barnett by all accounts is an excellent candidate on her own. The fact is there needs to be more women and now a woman has been taken out of the race, leaving the UDP almost like the PUP."

Hon. Patrick Faber, UDP Deputy Party Leader
"I don't know that you can say that necessarily. Remember that Dr. Barnett is the last election did not win and in fact our party made a way for women to obtain even the highest leadership position in this country. Dr. Barnett sits in the cabinet and so the party will continue to try to do its best to try to ensure that we have female candidates and top females in top leadership positions. So while it is we encourage and we championed women to be involved, we also want the best candidates when we put our foot forward for the general elections."

Hon. Dr. Carla Barnett, Lost convention
"We really and truly want to make politics something that's viable for women and not women viable - politics viable for women, because we have excellent women who want to run, but the way the process works it does not make it equally easy for men as for women. It's much more difficult for women than for men."
