Building Belize’s Digital Economy
posted (November 14, 2018)
And while that's an agriculture innovation for primary schoolers, today at the Biltmore secondary and tertiary students were showing digital innovation in an APP competition.

It was the first such competition for students, and they had to come up with apps in three main areas: transport, vital statistics and local government.

10 school groups from across the country did surprisingly well - according to the organizer - which is the Directorate of Foreign Trade:

Beresford Codd- Economist, Trade Directorate
"It is more of a pitch type competition where we give the students an opportunity to present their app. We are at the demo or prototype stage at this point given that we allotted two months for them to prepare. It has really been impressive because, you know, with the tight time constraints and the challenges that they faced with their own school schedules, because you know most of this has to be done outside of the regular class time. I've really seen some impressive apps. Some of them look like they are ready to go live. We are looking to get the top three, basically one app from each of the problems presented. They will be receiving development support through Beltraide, through the DGFT, through the IT Association both financial and technical, to get their apps to live-ready."

Michael Sabido- First Place, Local Gov't
"Well, our app's name is Ping. What Ping is about is that it is basically a communication platform whereby the municipalities can be in touch with their local populace and those people will be able to talk to their municipalities as well. So, what we tried to do is to create a two way communication between the people and their local municipalities."

Kenisha Armstrong- First Place, Vital Stats
"We really put in a lot of hard work and it was a very time consuming with grades, school, everything; trying to put everything together. But at the end of the day our determination and hard work really paid off."

Mohit Vanjani- First Place, Transport
"People in our school always had the problem of commuting from Belmopan to Belize, Corozal to Belize, from different places. So, that is why we said why not develop an app to help everyone go on one app, book online, so everyone could come; one in all. The main feature of our app is that we have booking online, group booking for up to five people. So let us say you are in San Ignacio, you want to book a bus ticket for your mom, from Belmopan to Belize, go ahead and book it online."

To go over the school winners, Delta from Belize High School won with their Transport App, the Technocrats from UB won for their Vital Stats App and the overall winner is DotSlash from Corozal Junior College for the local government communication app. The winner got a three thousand dollar prize from the Atlantic Bank.
