posted (November 15, 2018)

Tonight a BDF soldier is in serious condition after he had a terrible fall yesterday.  It happened at the Forward Operating Base at the edge of the Sarstoon.  Private Fidel Williams form the BDF Boat unit was unhitching a boat to go on a patrol when he slipped and fell. Police told us more today:

ACP Joseph Myvett - Head, NCIB
"Sometime after 9 AM, Punta Gorda police received information of an incident involving one private Unesimo Chulum. The initial information is that he is stationed at the Sarstoon and sometime early yesterday morning he was in the process of preparing a boat for patrol and whilst on the wharf, he slipped and fell into the water where he fell on a steel which was in the water which penetrated his left eye socket. As a result he was transported to Punta Gorda where he was airlifted to Belize City."

Police have his name as Onesimo Cholom but his name is actually Private Fidel Williams.  He was hit by a steel rod for a floating dock.  He is currently hospitalized at the KHMH and has undergone eye surgery.  He has lost his eye but has no brain injury. Upon hearing of the incident, the BDF scrambled and got him to the KHMH in a Defender aircraft UNDER TWO HOURS. He remained conscious after the injury.
