6 Years in Jail for Bmp Businessman
posted (November 16, 2018)
There is big news coming out of the Belmopan Supreme Court tonight. Jahan Abadi, a well-known businessman from Belmopan has been convicted in a trial without jury of abetment to murder by solicitation. Right now, he is prison serving the first night of a 6-year prison sentence.

You may remember him as one of the co-accused in the Bradley Paumen case from January 2016. That's when he, Paumen and others were charged for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. They allegedly worked together to plant an unlicensed firearm and loads of ammunition on Paumen's Frank's Eddy neighbor, Michael Modiri. Well, evidence from his recent trial says that he actually tried to hire a hitman to kill Modiri also.

DPP Cheryl-Lynn Vidal prosecuted the case against him, which began before Justice Antoinette Moore on July 18th. She called the man who Abadi tried to hire as the hitman, to testify against him in the trial. He's a serving the police officer, and he told the court that on August 9th, 2015, Abadi approached him, and asked him to kill Modiri, or to find someone to do so. He offered the sum of $3,000 as payment for the contract killing. The officer said that on that same day, he alerted a retired officer who was working with Michael Modiri about this plot. The testifying officer was provided with a recorder in the event Abadi ever contacted him again.

The officer testified that Abadi approached him again a few weeks later, and Abadi also visited him at his home. That officer then secretly recorded their conversation. They discussed the cost of hiring someone, and Abadi suggested the ways in which the killing could be carried out. One possible means of doing this was to make it look like a robbery, or even carrying it out while Modiri was reporting to the police station on a Friday. Also, the retired officer reported the matter to the police, and an investigation was commenced which led to Abadi's eventual arrest. DPP Vidal was also able to successfully get the recording of this conversation admitted as evidence against Abadi.

In his defense, Abadi remained silent, but he called his daughter as an alibi witness, in an attempt to convince the court that these shady negotiations never happened.

After deliberating, Justice Moore returned on September 28th, and she found Abadi guilty of abetment to murder. His sentencing hearing was held today, and he testified and said that he was sorry for having asked the officer to kill Modiri.

After consideration, Justice Moore sentenced him to 6 years imprisonment. Abadi was represented by attorney Arthur Saldivar.
