Celebrating Those “Preemies” Who Persevered
posted (November 16, 2018)
Keeping it on the subject of health, the KHMH says that for this year alone, it has had to care for 192 premature newborns.

That's a higher number than last year, and so, today, KHMH joined the rest of the world in observing World Prematurity Day.

Approximately 15 million babies worldwide, or one in 10 babies born every day will be premature, which put the infant at all kinds of health risks because his or her organs haven't properly developed.

We stopped by the KHMH's NICU today, where they were preparing to receive visits from children who were born premature, but who survived, and are now thriving.

We spoke with the Administrator about the festivities with those past patients: .

Neroli Williams - Manager, NICU, KHMH
"World Prematurity Day is celebrated wide every 17th of November. This is the first year that Karl Heusner is doing something to create the awareness."

"It's basically to create awareness to the public and parents to prevent prematurity births. Prematurity has a lot of complications. The baby is born very premature; they're not fully developed. The skin is not developed, the brain, the lung, the organs, nothing. So, our goal here today - well for the entire month, but for today specifically, we're inviting our graduates, babies who have been discharged from here to come back and interact with the staff and other relatives, or other patients who were discharged as well, just to see how they've come along, how they're doing. We have different age groups, from months to like 13 years-old who will come today."

"And for the parents, the fathers, the mothers, and the other relatives out there, we're asking to maintain diet and exercise, do your follow up checks. If you're pregnant in the joint clinics, take your vitamins. Know when you have hypertension and diabetes, to take your treatment and your follow-up care. Eat well. Dieting does not mean eating less, but just eating the right amount of food at any one time."

This was the KHMH's first observance of World Prematurity day.
