posted (November 20, 2018)
2 men from the Cayo District are in a critical condition at the KHMH tonight after they got electrocuted by one of the BEL high tension wires in Roaring Creek Village.

William Escobar and Mandeo Umaña were trying to clear away trees on a compound near the Westar Gas Station, and one of those felled trees pulled down the high-tension wire, which electrocuted them.

Police told us more:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"On Saturday, police were called to an area in Roaring Creek, near the Westar Gas Station, where it was reported that 2 persons, namely William Escobar, 20 years, and Mandeo Umana were cutting trees inside the compound when one of those trees fell on the high tension wire in the area, which caused both of them to be electrocuted. They were transported to the Western Regional Hospital, and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where they are listed in a critical condition."

As you just heard, the men are badly burnt and critical.

This afternoon BEL sent out a press release warning about the dangers of their high tension power lines.

Their press release says, quote, "…(BEL) is concerned about the wellbeing of the reported victims and pleads to the public to be cautious - always look up first and watch for power lines. As a reminder, getting too close to or touching any conducting object that is in contact with a power line, can cause a potentially deadly shock."

BEL advises that if you must trim trees growing near the power line, contact them for assistance first. You can reach them at 0-800-235-2273.
