BAHA Rejects Romaine Lettuce
posted (November 23, 2018)
And while the police warn about fake money on Placencia, BAHA is putting a ban in imported Romaine lettuce. The US Centre for Disease Control has determined that Romaine is causing an E-coli outbreak in the States.

If you don't know, E-coli causes serious health problems including severe diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia.

Because of this, BAHA and the Ministry of Health are advising Belizeans not to eat any romaine lettuce. Additionally, retailers and restaurants should not serve or sell any of this lettuce imported from the US and Canada until more information becomes available. This includes all types of romaine lettuce, such as whole heads of romaine, hearts of romaine, bags and boxes of pre-cut lettuce, and salad mixes which contain romaine, including baby romaine, spring mix, and Caesar Salad.

To protect public health, BAHA has implemented a temporary ban on the importation of romaine lettuce with immediate effect. They say that they will monitor the situation closely, and they will advise the public as necessary.

BAHA is also warning the general public that the Food Safety Inspection Services and the CDC are also investigating a possible outbreak of salmonella associated with Jennie-0 raw ground turkey products.

Salmonella also causes serious stomach problems including diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated food.

BAHA and the Ministry of Health advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products and only consume poultry meats that have been cooked at a temperature of 165? F.

Again, to safeguard public safety, BAHA has implementing a temporary ban on the importation of Jennie-0 products containing turkey meat with immediate effect.
