No Sisterly Love: Woman Charged for Big Sis Death
posted (November 26, 2018)
On Friday we told you about Isela Cano, the 23 year old San Juan villager charged for killing her big sister, 27 year old Keidi Yesenia Ramirez. Today, Cano went to court in Independence charged for manslaughter. The women's parents - who were initially detained - were released on Friday without charge. This after caution statements showed that Cano and her parents had tied Keidi Ramirez to her bed. Cano is the one who allegedly gagged her sister - which it is believed led to her death. Police are still investigating the post mortem results which show that Ramirez had damage to her pancreas consistent with a traumatic blow or blows.

Police say the DPP advised them that they should charge Cano alone for manslaughter, not murder. But, the DPP inquired with us today to point out that she didn't give any such directives to bring a criminal charge. When the topic came up at today's press briefing, we challenged police on it, and here's how that conversation went:

Reporter
"In regard to Miss Isela Cano, why was she not charged with murder, but with manslaughter?"

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"That was the directive given by the Office of the DPP."

Daniel Ortiz, reporter
"The DPP has contacted me saying that her office did not give any directives. That's what she told me this morning. We have 2 conflicting versions."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Well, I am reporting what was reported to me, and I know that what was previously reported to me was that the statements were sent to her office for perusal."

As you heard, the DPP tells us that she was personally reviewing the case, and that she has not directed that any criminal charge be brought against Cano. Nevertheless, Cano is currently facing a manslaughter charge for the death of her sister.
