Health Officials Investigate Santa Cruz Baby Death
posted (November 28, 2018)
Last night we showed you the tragic story of one year old Ofelia Na. She died on Monday afternoon after she suddenly fell ill with a bad fever and cough. Neither the family nor neighbors had a vehicle to rush the baby to the nearest hospital, which is over 30 miles away in Dangriga. The family says this is not the first baby to die in the village due to lack of personal resources and access to health facilities. Well, the Ministry of Health reached out to us to say that they have a health worker who lives in Santa Cruz. Her named is Damaris Tacen. She offers basic health services, education and does referrals. Ministry officials also told us that they conduct mobile health clinics twice a month in the village and according to their information, one was carried out as recently as November 8th. The Deputy Regional Manager of the Southern Region, Dr. Franelda Gutierrez is conducting an investigation into this case to see what could have been done to avoid the baby's death. For those in Santa Cruz who want to get in touch with Tacen they can call her at 632-0441.
