No Storm Scares for this Hurricane Season
posted (November 29, 2018)

Tomorrow, November 30th, marks the close of the 2018 Atlantic Basin Hurricane season, and thankfully, Belize was spared of hurricane activity.

The authorities say that the 2018 season was forecasted to have between normal, and slight above normal storm activity. For the most part, that forecast was fairly accurate with the above-normal activity taking place in North Atlantic.

There were a total of 15 named storms and 1 tropical depression. Of the 15 named storms, 8 became hurricanes, and 2 reached strengths of major hurricanes. The strongest storms this seasons were Hurricanes Florence with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour, and Hurricane Michael, which had maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour.

A press release says, quote, “The major factor that supported the above-normal activity in the North Atlantic was the presence of above-normal Sea Surface Temperatures. In the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, the normal condition was supported by a strong vertical wind shear, this makes conditions less conducive for tropical cyclone development.” End quote.
