posted (November 30, 2018)
Private Fidel Williams is in Merida for further eye treatment and examination. He left yesterday. Williams was at the Forward Operating Base on November 14th. He went to unhitch a BDF vessel, lost his footing, and fell face first into a submerged metal pipe, which dislodged his left eye. In a release sent today it states "Since the incident, Williams had undergone a surgery at the KHMH where the affected eye was removed and was kept under observation by the Ophthalmologist, after which he was transferred to the Force's Medical Center in Ladyville." It continues by saying that doctors from the Clinica De Merida will assess Private Williams for a prosthetic eye replacement. His appointment is set for today. He will return over the weekend.

And in one final note, the release clarifies that "Contrary to what has been circulating on various social media, Private Williams has never been asked to resign from the Belize Defence Force and he will continue to serve as a soldier. The Belize Defence Force Benevolent Fund makes provision for compensation to Private Williams for the loss of his eye."
