The cocaine - stacked Hawker 700 jet has been making headlines in Belize and Mexico. And as we told you, one Mexican newspaper, The Sol Quintana Roo, stated that it's the notorious Zeta cartel that's behind these plane landings in Belize. The story's headline read "Zetas are the masters and owners of Belize". Well, that characterization didn't sit too well with Deputy Compol Williams but today he was quite diplomatic in discussing the article.
Chester Williams, Deputy Compol
"I saw the article, I am amazed by it to say the least but if that is how they feel, that is how they feel I can’t take away their opinion from them, whoever is the author of that article but I can say to them that in Belize we have been doing our best to be able to prevent these planes from landing in these clandestine airstrips and I think we have been doing a good job jointly with the police, coast guard and BDF."
"But we are not here to cast blame on anybody, we have a very good working relationship with our Mexican counterparts in terms of looking at the sharing of information if it is that there is any information useful, even from that same article there are useful information for us to look at how we can develop our strategy to continue to fight against these persons who want to land these illegal aircraft into our territory so I don’t know what to say any more about the article other than to say there is no evidence to substantiate the claim of the article, we are not going to say there aren’t members of the Zeta’s in Belize, there could be and it is our duty to look at it and see if we can identify who these people are and then we go after them, we are not afraid of anybody."
This measured tone is quite different from Williams's outburst yesterday when he basically clowned the Mexican Federales for making a drug jet land right under their noses - with the pilot running off before any arrest could be made.
That cargo is considered a major discovery for Mexican authorities, because the 312 kilos discovered is of cocaine hydrochloride which means the drug had greater purity level and can produce up to 2,100 kilos of cocaine.
