Police Using New Crime Analysis Techniques
posted (December 4, 2018)
Today police commanders from all formations countrywide met at the Police Training Academy in Belmopan for the 1st Computer Statistics briefing. The main objective is to gather and analyze all the crime stats and to devise a collective strategic approach to fighting crime. Deputy Compol Chester Williams told us more about what they discussed in the meeting and why it's important to have all commanders on the same page.

Chester Williams, Deputy Compol
"This morning we are having our first ever national COMSTAT as well as the official launch of the Christmas anti-crime campaign. The national COMSTAT is basically where we look at our figures countrywide based on region. You know that the different regions do have their monthly COMSTAT and within those monthly COMSTATS is where the regional commander will then look at his figures at a disaggregate manner meaning the different formations or precincts within his respective area and the regional commander will then critique the performance of the formation or precinct commanders but with the national COMSTAT is where we are now looking at the performance of the regional commander where the figures are being looked at from a regional point of view."

"We have a total of 4 regions which is the northern region, the eastern region which is the biggest, then we have the western and southern region. But within the eastern region we have 3 divisions which is the eastern division 1 and 2 and 3, 1 being south side, 2 north side and the Cayes and 3 being rural, Ladyville and Hattieville so each of the commanders are here, not only the regional commanders are invited, we also have the formation and precinct commanders because it is important for them to see what is happening within their respective areas and in other parts of the country."

"Any highlights especially as you said in the Eastern division in terms of crime stats, any figures?"

Chester Williams, Deputy Compol
"Well I will tell you our numbers are down in most of the regions and you know that Belize City south side was the area that normally contributes to the number of major incidents is one of the regions that is more impressive right now that is a direct response to the effectiveness of operation act on the south side."

Courtney Weatherburne
"When you say the number for the south side are impressive, you mean compared to previous years, figures in previous years?"

Chester Williams, Deputy Compol
"You know south side figures for last year was one of the highest and this year south side figure is below last year's figures."

"It is surely important that we should be able to meet and look at our figures countrywide and it also gives the different regional commanders an ability to see what is happening in other parts of the country. You know one of our major issues is dealing with transient criminals and so here again the commanders have the opportunity to see who are those persons who are of concern to other commanders in other parts of the country and then be able to ensure that they put things in place in the even that these criminals go within their area of responsibility."

Williams hopes to have this meeting once every month or once every 3 months depending on what they agree on.
